In May 2019 Ray Karam ran as an Independent for the Federal seat of Richmond. With key focusses on the Environment, Small Business and Health, the values and policies the campaign focussed on were based on a common sense and sustainable approach to the needs of the people on the ground.
Environment: Addressing the biggest environmental challenge of our current time starts with us
The basic interaction between us – this (the basic human environment) is invariably overlooked when considering other environmental concerns. What does this look like for us? I know for me, the moment you dilute or dismiss the importance of true decency, from there relations become strained and the changes that we need to enact together will be compromised. The restoration of common decency in personal and societal relations is the fundamental key for us to be able to take sensible environmental action together. There are a number of key areas we can look at from there: Regenerative Agriculture and Sustainable Food Production
Regenerative Agriculture is fast becoming a cornerstone movement of environmental change and education and support for our farmers is key here to ensure whole community health of the food chain. From the reduction of chemical inputs on farms, to supporting farmers who are small operators and doing the right thing for their animals’ welfare, to the sustainable fresh food producers, to the pioneers of soil health and its impacts on reducing Carbon in the atmosphere. There is so much to celebrate about farmers in this country and their potential impacts on whole community health – literally from the 'ground up'. Renewable Energy
While electricity prices are continuing to cripple the average household, solar and other renewable and sustainable technologies are ever more readily available. More government support and more incentives to transition to these cleaner technologies is needed, whilst also keeping a close watch on the rates electricity companies are offering for solar generated power. |
Small Business
“A real love of mine, the interactions and relationships that are formed running a small business go deeper than what we call ‘life-long’. With ongoing connections and interactivity, your customers, producers, suppliers, staff etc all become part of the family, part of the business in their own way. Each one playing a vital role in the whole business and how it moves forward. Small businesses are a huge support into our community for many reasons: they are places to meet, employment providers, they support our basic needs and they provide us with a foundation to live with and amongst each other. Take all the small businesses out of a town and what have you got? They are the training grounds for people to have purpose and genuinely feed back into the community we all live. Are small businesses being continually supported to work and move forward with all that we see is needed? Small business is foundational to us all and their health is vital. Common sense regulation and relationships between regulatory bodies and business owners based on decency and respect is vital to the expansion of this sector. |
The time is now...
A system that puts people first is needed more than ever. The average person simply wants to go about their business, to raise their children to love and be loved in the security that only a decent, people-first system can provide.
I stand willing to wholeheartedly assist in the implementation of such a system.
Minimal government and regulatory interference, maximum people power and basic decency in human interactions is the foundation of this long overdue reform in how we relate in everyday life.
